“I still can’t believe it!”

Maddox smiled at the enthusiasm in her voice and adjusted the rearview mirror.

“I’m serious! This is like a dream! I mean, should I ask you to pinch me or something?”

“Can’t it wait till we get a little farther down the road? I thought I pinched you good a few times last night.”

Candy dropped her jaw a bit and punched his shoulder, but quickly wrapped her arms around his near one and pressed her cheek against it.

“I love you, Joe. Really.”

“Me, too, kid.”

“Honest?”

“I’m taking you to California with me, aren’t I”

Candy scrunched her nose as she smiled and pressed her cheek against his shoulder again.

“A surf shop,” she said. “This is so exciting! I’ve never even seen the Pacific Ocean. Is it like the Gulf ?”

“Yeah. Only more so.”

She patted her purse. “Everything I have saved is in an envelope in here. It’s almost five hundred dollars. Do you think it’ll be enough?”

“I have my stash, and there’s a loan waiting for us when we get there. We’ll make do,” he said.

The answer pleased her enough that she squeezed his arm again. He felt her weight settle against him.

“You promised you’d tell me what happened on the drive,” she said, fingering the medallion around her neck.

“And I will, but right now, I just want to put some real estate between us and the guys with badges. Then, we have to make a stop down south before mapping a route to LA.”

“Where?”

“A little place near the Rio Grande, just this side of the border. That’s where I’m going to bury that unusual piece of jewelry there around your neck.”

“Why there?”

“Let’s just say I got a phone call,” he said. He checked the rearview one more time, adjusting it. No one seemed to be creeping behind him. Nothing seemed to be following.

“Whatever you say, my handsome man of mystery. Oh, this is exciting, though, isn’t it?”

Maddox placed his hand on her leg and she scooted closer to him. He scanned the horizon for the moon, found it lurking off to one side, a bright, white sickle.

“It sure is,” he said. He stepped down on the gas and accelerated into the future, determined to make it, or at least part of it, his own.
